FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 4, 2004

Kathy Cronkite, mental health advocate, to speak at Alaska Psychiatric Institute May 12

Author of "On the Edge of Darkness: Conversations about conquering depression".

(Anchorage, Alaska) - Alaska Psychiatric Institute will host the second in a series of public awareness events on May 12, 2004 during the noon hour, featuring author and mental health advocate Kathy Cronkite. The daughter of Walter Cronkite, Kathy Cronkite wrote On the Edge of Darkness: Conversations about conquering depression, based in part her own experience with clinical depression. The book has received wide acclaim for its informative and eloquent treatment of mental illness. In writing this book, Cronkite interviewed celebrities who suffer from depression, including Mike Wallace, Joan Rivers, Dick Clark, Kitty Dukakis, and others.

"Presenting this series is a first for Alaska Psychiatric Institute," Barbara Russell, event coordinator at API said. "It's a unique opportunity to bring great speakers to the community and to raise the awareness of mental health issues and the work API is doing. Over 125 guests attended our last presentation in mid-December which featured Dr. Pat Esmiol, and we had some excellent feedback from that event."

Cronkite is coming to Anchorage to offer the keynote address at the Millennium Hotel on May 13, as part of the 2004 Annual Mental Health Consumer and Family Leadership Conference. For more information on the Conference, contact Yvonne Evans at the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Alaska, 907-272-9952.
