DHSS Commissioner Names Three Division Directors

Lombardo to Public Assistance, Clarke to Administrative Services, Ware to Juvenile Justice

(Juneau) – Commissioner Joel Gilbertson announced today the appointments of Tony Lombardo as Director of the Division of Public Assistance, Janet Clarke as Director of the Division of Administrative Services, and Patty Ware as Director of the Division of Juvenile Justice, to fill senior management positions within the Department of Health and Social Services.

“With the appointment of these three talented and experienced individuals, we continue to build a strong senior management team for this department,” Gilbertson said. “This department is about providing services and meeting needs to the people of Alaska. I am confident that Tony Lombardo, Janet Clarke and Patty Ware will help us keep our commitment to continued services, and move ahead with our initiatives to improve customer service in all areas.”

(Anthony) Tony Lombardo was named Director of the Division of Public Assistance. For the past three years, Lombardo has been Director for Advocacy at Covenant House, a non-profit agency serving homeless and at-risk youth in Anchorage. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage, worked at the Dept. of Social Work, and was in private law practice for five years. Lombardo also worked for ten years in Federal practice with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. Mr. Lombardo is a graduate of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and a graduate of Willamette University Law School.

Janet Clarke was named Director of the Division of Administrative Services. Ms. Clarke has served as DHSS Director of Administrative Services since 1991. She has extensive experience in the state budget system, working in the Office of Management & Budget from 1983 to 1990 as Deputy Director and as Budget Analyst. She has also worked as a fiscal analyst with the University of Alaska, Juneau, and with Benton County, Oregon. Clarke has a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Oregon State University.

Patty Ware was named Director of the Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). Ms. Ware has been Acting Director for DJJ since June 2002. She has 12 years of service with DHSS, including five years with DJJ serving as Deputy Director, Program Manager and Probation Officer. She has also worked in related capacities for the City of Juneau, Municipality of Anchorage, The Salvation Army and Juneau Alliance for the Mentally Ill. Ware has a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Amherst College, post-graduate course work in counseling psychology from the University of Alaska Anchorage, and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Alaska Southeast.

Governor Murkowski’s recent appointments to the Department of Health and Social Services bring a total of six new appointments for DHSS.
