The Copper River Basin Multidisciplinary Developmental Disability Team (M3D) was organized in time for the first training in Seattle in March of 1999. Dr. Phil Mattheis, the team's developmental disability pediatrician, Gay Wellman, the team coordinator, Millie Lewis, RN from Cross Roads Medical Center, and Jim Lorence, Copper River School District's school counselor are the members of the original team that received training at the University of Washington . Several new members have been added to the team, including, Dr. Randy Moss, clinical psychologist, Misty Baker, case manager, Byron Rice, CRSD special education director, Nancy Roullier, director of the Kluti-Kaah Head Start, and Kathy Hindman, Susan and Mike Voyles and Alice Hand as parent navigators. The team has identified others in the various communities who become part of the process when there are clients from their communities. In-service trainings on FASD and other developmental disability issues are offered to new members when they join the team. These trainings are usually open to all interested residents of the Copper River Basin.

The "clinic" process is as follows; 1) Referrals come to the M3D Team to Gay Wellman, Coordinator. 2) Clients are contacted and an appointment is set up to complete intake paperwork, and sign release of information forms. If they prefer, clients are seen at home. 3) Once the initial paperwork is completed and all available background information acquired, an appointment is made for the client to be seen by Dr. Moss (if needed). 4) An appointment is also made for the client and their family to see Dr. Mattheis. Gay or Misty usually attends the appointment with the doctor and the family. Again Dr. Mattheis is able to meet with the clients where ever they are most comfortable. 5) Once completed, a team meeting is held with as many of the team members as needed to decide on diagnosis and to begin the initial service plan. 6) Final reports are sent to those service providers on a "need to know" basis as long as the family and/or client have signed release of information forms. 7) Follow-up meetings and clinic appointments are held to initiate the plan and to provide ongoing evaluation of the plan. Both doctors are available by phone for consultation about ongoing clients as needed.

Referrals are accepted for anyone of any age who is having either behavior or learning problems for any reason that may indicate any kind of developmental disability. The referrals can come from the client or their families, from school personnel, from DFYS, from medical or mental health providers, or from any other service providers.
