Senior & Disabilities Services

Welcome to the
SDS Online Care Coordination Training

How to Proceed

Welcome to DSDS Care Coordinators Web-Based training. This training is designed to be completed at your own pace.

You should carefully review all segments of the training and then take the final exam, which is located in Segment Z. The exam is designed to be completed on line and submitted to SDS for grading. Once you successfully complete the exam, you will be given credit for the training, which will qualify you for certification. A certificate of training will be emailed to you for verification of your attendance.

Please allow sufficient time (one-to-two weeks) for us to process your exam.

This training is designed to provide you with basic information and procedures. It is not intended to qualify you as a care coordinator. The basic qualifications needed to become a care coordinator are set forth in Segment C. Even with the basic qualifications a new care coordinator should spend considerable time with a mentor.

Note that you may ask questions of the DSDS staff in Segment Y. The response to your question will be posted in that segment for others to review if we feel that it would be useful for other care coordinators. We will also post DSDS news and updates from time to time.

Segment X provides the opportunity to make recommendations to improve training.

Segment W contains a list of DSDS staff categorized by Waiver responsibility. Please feel free to contact us when you need assistance.

Some Division History

  • Waiver services are still relatively new to Alaska, coming online in 1993.

  • The Department of Health and Social Services experienced a massive restructure in July 2003 that brought all waiver services under the Division of Senior and Disabilities Services (DSDS), while Mental Health Services moved to the Division of Behavioral Health. You may still hear people refer to us as DMHDD or DSS; these division acronyms no longer exist and should be removed and/or replaced on any template forms you or your agency might utilize.

Alaska Waivers

Alaska currently provides 4 types of Home & Community Based (HCBW) Waivers served by 3 DSDS offices across the state.

  1. MRDD: Mental Retardation/Developmental Disability
  2. CCMC: Children with Complex Medical Conditions
  3. APD: Adults with Physical Disabilities
  4. OA: Older Alaskans
