Developmental Disabilities Program
Individual Services
Individual Services are based upon the needs of the individual in the context of the person's family and community. In general they are offered in the individual's home and community. Possible services may include but are not limited to: care coordination, chore services, day habilitation, independent living support, in-home supports, behavioral training, intensive active treatment, residential services, respite care, specialized adaptive equipment, or vocational services. Harborview Developmental Center (HDC) was built in Valdez in the years immediately following statehood. HDC opened in order to return individuals with DD who had been sent out of state for DD services. As a result of collaborative planning among advocates, state employees, and community providers, HDC closed in November 1997. Closing the facility represented a dramatic change in the delivery of services to Alaskans with DD. Alaska is one of a few states where there are no public or private Intermediate Care Facilities for the Mentally Retarded/Developmentally Disabled.
How To Design Services
Once an individual has been selected from the waitlist, the DD Program Specialist in the region provides him or her with written notification. The Regional Program Specialist will also provide the individual with a listing of providers in the individual's own community or a nearby community. When there is more than one provider in the community, the individual can choose which provider they would like to have assist them in developing a plan of care or in providing the services that they want. It is common for families to interview potential providers to determine for themselves the differences between providers. The Division of Senior and Disabilities Services believes it is very important that individuals and families have choices and that they control their own lives. In order to ensure that individuals have these options, the State has adopted the DMHDD Service Principles. The Service Principles are DMHDD's guidelines. The Service Principles let people know what DMHDD stands for and what DMHDD is willing to support, philosophically, programmatically and fiscally.
