Genetic and Specialty Clinics

Genetic Clinics

The Alaska Genetic Clinics offer specialty genetics clinics for diagnosis and genetic counseling for individuals with inherited conditions, chromosomal disorders (i.e. Down syndrome), or birth defects. Common referrals include:

  • a person with a birth defect or genetic disorder;
  • families in which more than one person has the same condition or disorder;
  • a child who is not developing within normal limits, physically or mentally;
  • couples who have had stillbirths, miscarriages, or infertility;
  • persons requesting carrier testing/genetic screening because of family history or ethnic group;
  • genetic counseling and screening for hereditary concerns and family cancer syndromes.

Speciality Clinics

Specialty clinics improve access to care for children in need of consultation, screening, and follow-up. HCS brings medical specialists to regional centers to offer specialty care in or close to communities where children and their families reside. Efforts are made to involve local health practitioners in these clinics to insure coordination of care.
