In March, 2004, the Partnership identified the need for joint public education messages about the importance of breast health screening. It was envisioned that these messages would be general in nature (e.g., "Breast health is important, visit your clinician and follow their recommendations") and not ones which would specifically target any particular program within the Partnership. It was believed that a general message would allow year distribution and not just during a specific season or month (e.g., October/Breast Cancer Awareness Month.) Finally, the Partnership envisioned a message that could be aired and distributed statewide via radio, TV or print ad. While contemplating how to best achieve all of these goals, the Partnership decided to approach an Alaskan celebrity who might agree to be its' spokesperson and help to spread breast health awareness messages throughout Alaska. On April 16 th , 2004, the Partnership was very pleased to secure DeeDee Jonrowe, breast cancer survivor and Iditarod musher as its spokesperson!
