Injury Disparities in Alaska
In 2001, the Maternal Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources
and Services Administration funded a 2-year project to describe injury
disparities experienced by Alaskan youth and young adult women, the
Alaska Women and Children's Injury Disparities
Project. The overarching goal of the project was to improve the
ability of the Alaska Division of Public Health (DPH) as a whole to
analyze, report on, and target racial and geographic disparities in
childhood and maternal injury morbidity and mortality in Alaska.
Early in the process, a group of professionals already involved in
injury prevention and control were brought together to form an advisory
group that would provide ongoing guidance to DPH staff during
the course of the project. The fruits of this collaboration include
a set of Power Point presentations describing disparities in injury
hospitalization and death, two fact sheets with
selected highlights from the disparities analysis, and a list of injury
resources containing web sites and addresses for Alaska-specific
and national sources for injury-related information and data.
