Health Planning and Systems Development runs programs that strengthen health care systems in Alaska. Our work focuses on health care services, financing, workforce, and facility planning. We also conduct statewide health planning to help sustain an organized and efficient health care delivery system.

Our programs and projects:
- Alaska Crash Outcomes Pilot Project (ACOPP) — improves the Injury Surveillance System to reduce unnecessary burden of death, disability and costs of motor vehicle crashes
- Alaska Office of Rural Health — strengthens Alaska’s rural health infrastructure
- Alaska Primary Care Office — assists communities with primary health care access and workforce disparities
- Certificate of Need Program — contains health care costs through a review process for new and expanding facilities
- Community Health Aide Training and Supervision Grants (CHATS) Program — assists access to primary health care in rural communities with grants for training and supervising community health aides
- Comprehensive Integrated Mental Health Plan — coordinates planning for beneficiaries of the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority
- Frontier Extended Stay Clinic (FESC) Project — works to develop protocols and reimbursement for extended clinic stays in remote areas
- Health Planning and Data Management — supports health care in Alaska with data collection, analysis, and planning
- Rural Hospital Flexibility Program — allows small hospitals the flexibility to reconfigure operations and be licensed as Critical Access Hospitals and supports rural health care systems
- Small Hospital Improvement Program (SHIP) — fosters quality improvement in small rural hospitals
- State Planning Grant(2005-2007) Data and Reports — explores solutions to health insurance coverage for Alaskans
- Telehealth Program — allows health care services to be provided when the patient and health care provider are separated by distance
- Workforce Initiative — supports recruitment and retention of competent workforce through research and alliances with programs and initiatives
