Cancer, heart disease, diabetes and stroke are among the leading causes
of death in Alaska, and almost a third of all heart disease and cancer
deaths can be attributed to what people eat. Current research shows
that good nutrition lowers people's risk for obesity and many other
chronic conditions, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis
and some types of cancer.
The 2005
Dietary Guidelines for all Americans, published in January 2005
by the U.S. Department of Health and Social Services, encourages a diet
rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy and lean
protein foods.
