Living Well Alaska: A Chronic Disease Self-Management Program

Living Well Alaska is a series of workshops that help people with chronic illnesses learn ways to self manage their condition and take charge of their life. Living Well Alaska workshops are being held throughout Alaska for people with all kinds of chronic illnesses, such as arthritis, diabetes and heart disease. Living Well Alaska covers a range of health topics such as:

  • healthy eating
  • relaxation techniques
  • managing fatigue
  • low impact exercising
  • managing medications
  • problem solving
  • goal setting
  • working with your health professional.

Research on this program has shown that participants are able to manage their symptoms better and communicate more easily with their doctors and loved ones. People who take the program feel better, are less limited by their illness, and may spend less time at the doctor or in the hospital.

The State of Alaska, Section of Chronic Disease and Health Promotion, has obtained from Stanford University a State license that is valid through August 2009. We have also negotiated memorandum of agreement (MOA) with current course leaders and master trainers so that Living Well Alaska can officially be taught in Alaska.  All course leaders are required to sign MOAs to teach Living Well Alaska workshops.
