FY 2009 ~ Third Quarter
Training Accomplished, April - September, 2009
- Aggression Replacement Training Refresher Training was presented by Chris Agloinga and Shea Daniels on June 23-25th, 2009 in Juneau. Ten staff attended this training which provided current facilitators a review of ART concepts and how to facilitate groups. Quality Assurance was also provided at the Johnson Youth Center during this visit. Chris returned to Ketchikan and Juneau and provided quality assurance to KRYF and JYC on July 19th – 21st.
- Counseling Skills Workshops — Robert Kehrer and Ron Bower presented a CSW to the Kenai Peninsula Youth Facility on June 22nd & 23rd to five employees of KPYF. It was very well received and he provided helpful information for both new and seasoned employees. This is a two-day training for JJOs that will increase understanding and/or skills in:
- Role of Counselor
- Relationship Building
- Interpersonal Skills
- Problem Solving
- Dealing with adolescents realistically
- Effective Behavior change
- Realistic Self-Care

- Group Facilitation was presented by the Co-Occurring Disorders Institute in Anchorage on June 23 at Mclaughlin Youth Center to 10 participants. This concludes the contract with CoDI for this training. Overall CoDI trained 70 DJJ staff in Group Facilitation Skills.
- Restorative Justice 101 was held in Nome on August 21st and 22nd to a total of 23 particpants. This four-hour training provided by DJJ trainers, Jana Engle and Lori Fuller, introduces participants to Restorative Justice practices and increases understanding of the values and components of Restorative Justice. Other accomplishments during this quarter have been to generate the quarterly EUDL report; create and distribute the annual statewide training survey; assist in the creating of the 2008 DJJ Year in Review; update the DJJ training website; obtaining contracts for the various trainings, and assisting in the coordination of the Technical Assistance provided to DJJ by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Dr. Alvin Cohn.
Upcoming Training — August-September, 2009
- Building Bridges with Families. Will be held at MYC on September 15th from 8:30-4:30 and will be presented by Carolynn Greene and Mary Kearns. Another session is scheduled September 16th from 8:30-4:30 and will be presented by Nikki Mincks and Liz Meredith. This one-day training is for both JJOs and JPOs. The training objectives are to increase level of comfort and effectiveness in interacting with families and to improve the continuity of services provided to families throughout our Division. - RADACT Fall Training Academy will be held September 28th – October 15th, 2009. 112 hours toward certification through the Alaska Commission for Behavioral Health Certification (ACBHC). Training Resources
All Department of Administration, Division of Personnel (DOP) training is now available with no per-participant fee. Travel funding is available through the statewide training office for the following classes:
- Supervisory Training – Offered by Department of Personnel.
A 5 day Academy for Supervisors will be held for DJJ staff at the MYC in Anchorage the week of February 22 – 26, 2010.
New supervisors are expected to attend the 5-day Academy, and all supervisors are expected to attend the Change Management and Performance Coaching trainings. - 5- day Academy for New Supervisors

- Valuing Diversity – This training meets the requirements of Administrative Order 195. Funding is available for travel if needed.
- DJJ Probation Pre-Service Training — Register online here.
Developed by DJJ staff and first offered online starting August 2007.
Training Objectives: on completion of the training participants will be familiar with the concepts of:
- DJJ field policy and procedure manual
- DJJ website and organization of the Department and DJJ
- Alaska Statutes, Rules of Court, and legal definitions
- juvenile delinquency and probation in the United States and in Alaska
- assessment of criminogenic risks, needs, and responsivity
- confidentiality and ethics
- restorative justice
- rights of victims and parents
- mandatory reporting of child abuse
- suicide prevention and theory
- case management and graduated responses
- time management and setting priorities
- community development objectives
- forensic and motivational interviewing
- document preparation and technical writing
- detention assessment instrument
- entering data and retrieving reports from the Juvenile Offender Management Information System (JOMIS)
- supervisor-approved training objectives for their first year of employment
Ask for your supervisor's approval if you are interested in a particular training.
