Deaf and Hard of Hearing Estimates in Alaska
Below is an estimation of Alaska-specific data based on national-level estimates of the prevalence of all persons and persons over the age of 5 who report some level of hearing impairment with and without the use of a hearing aid. This estimation uses national-level estimates from the 2003 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and the 2001 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP). All Alaska-specific estimates are applied using the 2008 Alaska population estimate of 679,720 (Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, 2009) and the 2007 U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey estimation of 7.3% (49,619) of Alaska’s population that are under the age of 5 and 6.7% that are aged 65 and over (45,541).
